i got this 49cc china engine with an electric start. can the electric start be taken off of the engine and just use a pull start. or is ther a way to hook up a battery to the electric start.

Personally i have never tried or wanted to take out the battery with all parts that connect to it like the electric start. My suggestion is that you find the wire for the electric start and trace it and see where it leads to . Than just take it out and see what happens. im not sure if you want to take the electric start out (only) or take everything out that runs on the battery. Be a little more specific please, and i'll try to suggest some more things. :bigl

With the X series bikes taking the starter off will give you another 5mph. The starter turns the magnets all the time which puts a big load on the motor.
You can see this yourself when you do motor work... simply turning the motor by hand you feel the grab of the magnets as they try to stop the crank (which should turn freely).
You can leave the battery in to drive the lights and other accessories, but you will need to remove the lead from the relay to the starter motor.
