  • Fuel Water Seperator Problems

I just bought a js550. Its my first pwc and It runs great except for the fuel water separator fills up with gas and chokes the engine. Not sure why its doing this. All lines are clean. Not sure when the filter was changed last. If I change that should it separate right? When I take off container and squeeze the filter gas comes out more. It mainly fills up when I prime the engine not much when its running but does a little. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thanks for all advice in advance!

The separator is suppose to fill up. The most common issue with the JS separator is the seal is worn( the on at the top of the separator when you unscrew the unit). Other than that, I'd do a inspect of the tank(is it holding pressure), the one way check valve, and all fuel lines for cracks/tears.

Ok. But it shouldn't fill up with gas. The seal seams to be ok. Do you think the filter is bad?

I have a JS550 and it does fill up with gas, mainly when priming, but it does when running too sometimes. When you take the gas cap off is there pressure releasing? If so I'm guessing your 1 way valve is the culprit, like OldSkoot said.

There isn't pressure releasing. Should it be? Wouldn't that be bad becaaue then it won't be able to draw gas very well when there is a bunch of pressure in there?

No there shouldn't be, but I was asking to try and track down the problem. The oring could be bad even if it looks good, I would replace it just because they're cheap. The way the separator works it has to fill up with gas sometimes so the water will go to the bottom as water is heavier than gas. Newer Kawi stand-ups don't even have the separator so I would try bypassing it with an inline connector (You can use PCV connectors from auto zone) then see if you're still having the problem or not. That will at least narrow down the possibilities.

Well it only has trouble running once it fills up. I'm 99 percent sure that it's a problem in the seperator. I was considering by passing it. I think that is what I am going to do. Will go to auto zone and get one. Btw do you know what size plugs to get? I know I need ngk's but I'm not sure what size.

If you don't have a manual and need one, I can scan mine over the weekend. Hope to see some pics and footage sometime . I have 2 550's and they're a blast to ride.

I use NGK BR8ES plugs in mine and they work great, I sell them on my site if you can't find some locally, NAPA normally has the best selection of NGK plugs. I think you're on the right track, bypass the separator and see what happens. I also got my 550 as my first stand-up and love it, built it from just a bare hull so it has a special place in my heart. lol. The thing about a 550 is if you can ride that, you can ride any stand-up because of how unstable they are. I remember the fist time I rode a superjet after having my 550 for a while, I was like damn these superjet guys have it so easy! Haha.

A couple weeks ago I went to napa and got in line connector so I bypassed the separator and put new lines on. It ran great when I started it up! turned idle up a little and now its perfect! Going out on Monday for memorial day weekend. Hopefully all is well! I appreciate your help Matt

It ran fine for the first couple of hours and then it started cutting off on me and making sounds like the engine was half on. I think one of the cylinders isn't firing sometimes. What could it be? Too much oil maybe? I have really run all te gas out of it in a while so it could have a lot of oil in it. Not sure though. Any ideas?
