  • Modified GP460 I just picked up wont start

Hello BilletBoard! I recently picked up a Super GSR46R with a non-working GP460 engine. This motor came equipped with the ADA head kit for gp460 as well as the +1mm stoker crank. In pulling the engine apart I found deep scoring around the exhaust port of the cylinder base. It is my thinking that the cylinder base as well as the piston/ring should be replaced. I was wondering if someone has any information regarding what could make the scoring happen like this. I assume the ring could be getting caught up somehow but is there any common issue I could be missing? Could it be an issue with the stroker crank? Not too sure about this one...

The previous owner had the dome for running 110 octane which I want to replace with the 91 octane option that specifies its for the +1mm stroker. I have no reason to believe the head needs to be replaced by looking at it other than the dome being switched. Am I correct in assuming the top piece on the ada head kit [the head I guess] is generally able to be reused if there is no apparent wear? Also my final consideration is concerning the copper gaskets; do I need to replace them with new ones? Im assuming the current gaskets have been run for some time. I see there is one for the dome and possibly one for the cylinder (although there are two options for the cylinder gasket thickness and that I am also confused about).

Another thing I noticed was a little oil leaking out of the crankcase right at the bottom. I haven't taken this apart yet because I didn't want to pull the flywheel. I belive I will have to though because I do not see the stock gasket in place; it looks like the previous owner has redone this with gasket maker paste becuase theres some kind of gasket there but I question its integrity. Is the correct gasket for the crankcase the CY 4-Bolt Crankcase Gasket on DDM? I don't see it specifically listing the gp460. Also there is a steel reinforced option, is that the right move?

I know I'm throwing a lot out there but any information would be appreciated. If it's too much trouble I will just get the long block replacement motor and call it a day but I wanted to use the upgrades that I got with it if possible (+1mm stroker, ADA head kit). Also if anyone could recommend the best way to go about cleaning these parts (I was thinking parts/brake cleaner and pretty much the same for the carb when i do the rebuild. Thanks for looking.

My opinion, low oil mixture was used and the cylinder needs to be lightly honed. New piston and ring/s as well. Always replace gaskets, even copper. You might need a new case gasket, not a big deal. And the 2 PC head can be reused. All gaskets and seals along the way should be replaced.
if you don't, you might have to redo everything twice.

Yes, the crankcase uses silicone gasket sealer on both half’s of crankcase. No paper gaskets for 460’s. Also, the ada billet shell is reusable with new cut cylinder and dome.

the cylinder looks toast IMO. Most engine components look okay. Totally rebuildable IMO.

Thanks for the quick response Silverbullitt7. Sound advice to replace all the gaskets along the way; better safe than sorry! ADA sales team got back to me and confirmed what you said about the 2 PC head being reusable so Ill just get the cylinder/piston/rings/dome + the new gaskets + fuel lines/filter + carb rebuild to be safe.

Can anyone confirm about the correct gasket for the crankcase / whether they run the stock or steel reinforced gasket on the GP460?
Also if anyone has recommendations on chemical products to use for cleaning the walbro carburetors? I have a can of Gumout Carb and Choke cleaner... I've heard mineral spirits though. Also for cleaning engine parts

Does this mean I have to make my own gasket for the crankcase or that i should use sillicone sealer when i put a new one on?

yeah, just smear a thin film of silicone sealer on each side of crankcase when installing the crankcase half’s together. The excess will squeeze out when tightening the bolts.

Does anyone know is I can put on a copper cylinder gasket as is or do I need to use a sealant or lube or something. Sorry for the stupid questions but I’m super new to this stuff

Just excited about the ped and wanted to let yall know what it’s doing. I’m hitting 46 mph and still pretty punchy on the low end. 8/68 gearing with a 92 link chain. I have a silenced rhino, slitzell cylinder reed, reed ported head, +1mm stroker. I’m about to modify the case and throw on the ADA 15:1 head kit that I just had ported. I use the gsr40 clutch and it’s way better than the stock. It a TINY bit slower of the line but hardly. It’s outlasted the stock clutch by far and since it’s much lower RPM I can cruise next to people slowly or lane-split without being as obnoxious. I’m not sure if I’m posting this where I’m trying to. If not, my bad
