  • Are Gopeds Illegal?

Are Gopeds legal to ride on the streets in Bay Area California? I read that as long as you have a license and stay under 15 mph in the bike lane its fine. Then other places say theyre considered motorized skateboards and are illegal. Will I get pulled over for riding one ? Anyone near Redwood City San Mateo area been pulled over for riding them? I haven't ridden in about 20 years but I just bought 2 xpeds and I'm scared to ride them.

I bet if you are not wearing a helmet you will get a ticket.

In Seattle the electric go ped is allowed on the sidewalk since is a class 2 "electric bike"

Sioux Falls... I never really travel around town on my peds. My motorcycles tend to be more of the ticket getters.

Goped had laws made against them in late 90s early 2000s depending on were u live. Some cops have different views on were u can ride if at all. But that's what made Gopeds so cool growing up in early 2000s that they were illegal and in suburban areas u can duck an dodge the pigs. And piss off the neighbors. All this said it detours squares from riding and keeps the enthusiasts extreme

It also hurts the community and growth of the sport/hobby.

I was all about gopeds a few years back, but after my buddy got pulled over on his 460 and was cited/summoned to appear in court, I lost interest due to the risk losing some of my liberties.

After the court date, he was on a probationary period where of he was cited for anything, speeding, running stoplight/signs, he would have gone to jail.

Luckily it all worked out for him, but it hurt our extreme dedication to gopeds.

That said, it won't stop be from riding again in the future.

Half the reason I enjoyed riding them back in the day was because they were illegal

California vehicle code has a section on scooters. I keep a copy of it in a plastic bag in my handlebar pad. They refer to electric scooters in particular and saving fuel etc. but at the end of the description it says this applies to all scooters, not just electric. A seat is not legal on a scooter by California law. Stand up only. Can run with traffic if you can maintain the speed limit. You can use the bike lane if not. Go to Ca. Motor vehicle code book online and read and copy it. This will save a lot if you get stopped. Cops are not used to someone having printed regulations with them

I went to CA DMV website and it says motorized scooters are legal if you have a license and stay under 15mph in the bike lane. Then I read other articles online stating gopeds are considered motorized skateboards and are illegal. Printing out the scooter laws from dmv sounds like a good idea.

I had the same thing printed out since bikers wanted to fight me. (on electric ped in bike lanes)
