  • Identification and fuel line questions

    I’ve had this since I was a kid and my father recently passed. He had it fixed up but when I tried to start it today fuel was leaking where the fuel line enters the tank. Anyone know what version this is? Also how does fuel not leak when the line is inserted through the tank? I’ll eventually take it apart to fix it up because ether primer bulb is also rotted.

    Gas tanks are a pain to work on. You push fresh tubing through the hole and out the tank lid. Then you press in a plastic barbed fitting into the tubing and try to pull the tube back out the tank leaving it half in the tank and half out. This is supposed to create a pressure seal between the tube and tank hole. I recommend buying new tank tube kit and also gas resistant glue.(I smear the glue around the edge and let dry) You can then test for a leak using rubbing alcohol.

      If your lines and bulb are already dried out then the carb internals are likely dried out too. Look to replace the carb or if you know how then rebuild it. Best to use a carb that has a choke if you have an aftermarket intake filter. Or swap back to the stock intake which works totally fine and has a build in choke.

        Thanks, yeah I saw a video where a guy put the fuel filter on and then pulled the tubing out so part of the barbed end was maybe sealing the tubing with the tank. It looked like for the return did the same thing with a barbed piece inside the tube then pulled it out so it was snug. I’m guessing just that snug fit is what kept it from leaking.

          My dad was cheap so he rigged a round metal can on the carb and threw a foam filter in it hahaha. It worked fine and the carb looks clean. He had it running and rode it around in the last year, but recently picked it up and tried to get it running again only to find the gas leak. I did order new fuel lines and am going to tackle that first and then go from there.

            Colder climates the lack of the choke makes it hard to start. I actually really like the stock intake since you can replace the foam for cheap rather than dealing with cleaner spray.

            Good to start simple but gas these days has a lot of ethanol in it which attacks plastic. Was not always like that.

              Yeah I’m in AZ so usually not too cold. I’ll have to take a closer look once I start taking it apart. Looks like the carb is the original Walbro WYJ-138. It’s over $40 on some of the Goped sites but looks like there are some generic brand once pretty cheap if I had to replace the whole carb.

                I would stay away from the generic since they don't work well.I tried a few with bad results.

                  Thanks, appreciate the help. Saw some on ddmracing for $45 if I do need a new carb. Any other places to find them? Are there other brand carbs for the g23lh that work well?

                    DDM is a good place. The stock g23lh setup is fine how it is so maybe you could attempt a rebuild kit for the carb?

                      Just wanted to let you know I got her running today. Put new fuel lines in, new primer bulb and was able to fire it up by push start. Still can’t get it to pull, but it was fun getting it going again. I’ll have to mess with the throttle a bit and get the engine dialed in again, but was happy I got it running again. Thanks for the help and responses!
