  • DDM Zenoah R/C Pullstart Conversion kit for GP460 Engines

My GP460 pull start broke so I bought the DDM Zenoah R/C pullstart conversion kit for GP460 engines (http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/it.A/id.7673/.f) and now I cant get it to work. Does anyone have a tutorial on how to get it working? I found this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S98fYO9YJ2A) but when I installed the pullstart adapter the starter/pullstart doesn't engage. It seems as thought the pullstart adapter is too short and whatever catches on the adapter is too shallow....if you can link me to a guide or provide specific instructions that would be great.

You have to pull it faster/harder than the easy start. Give it a quick firm yank and see if it engages.

I think the problem is the starter isn't even touching the adapter. There is a gap between the two. Pedguy, did I have to remove the metal plate attached to the flywheel on the gp460?

can you post a pic? all of mine were pretty straight forward. unbolt the metal pawl from the flywheel for the 460 spring assist starter, then bolt up the new ddm pawl and then the pullstart

I'll attempt it again when I get home from work. If it doesn't work I'll post up some pics. The fact that people have been installing the conversion without problems gives me hope, maybe I was doing something wrong. Did you do anything to the pull start?

Only this should be on the fly wheel.

Also when you reamed out the holes on the RC pull start are they all the same or uneven ?

I just bought the kit so the holes were pre-drilled by DDM.

I am pretty sure when you get the RC pull start conversion you need to make the holes a little bigger

If you get the kit ddm does the holes for you.

You should take it all off and start over. There's really not much to mess up with those things.

I'm sorry to say man but if you got your 460 compression raised in one way or another from stock you're gonna have nothing but trouble from those things. Mod the 460 pullstart and forget about it. Bigger and ugly but they work. I had an rc pullstart blow in to every individual part. Trying to get back to my truck from a night out before work and it blew. Had a craftworks rope, metal paw, billet handle. Then they wear out and the little butterfly washers that hold the paw back don't and they vibrate to the side and let the paw back out and bounce off the flywheel adapter. If you do stay with it make sure the paw is extending out as far as it can. Shouldn't have a problem with it hitting the flywheel adapter. Buy a few covers and a metal paw or carry an extra plastic paw. Sorry for ranting but I absolutely hate the rc pullstarts. I used to hate on the 460 ones but once modded right and used right you'll never think about it again.

Got it all figured out with the help of Christian from twinbrothersracing in the SFV. I got a RC pull start from him and compared it to the pull start that DDM sent me. DDM's pullstart had the plastic pawl but it didn't have a shroud on it. If you don't know what I am talking about, there is the plastic pawl on the pull start that has a shroud surrounding it. The DDM pull starter came with the pawl completely exposed with no shroud around it. The pawl was also not extended out as much as the new RC pullstart that I bought. Basically, DDM sent me a lemon right out of the box. I don't want to deal with DDM's return right now because I broke the pull start they sent by pulling way too hard, but I'm pretty disappointed with my purchase. Their adapter works perfectly fine but in order for their adapter to work it needs a working pull start without any parts missing.

Sounds like you got a Zenoah RC starter (no shroud) vs. the Chung Yang RC (w shroud) around the pawl. Not sure why that matters for the I was going to use the DDM RC adapter when I got a GP460 for my go quad. I broke a lot of the spring loaded easy start GP units.

Purchased the RC starter and DDM adapter, and had no problems installing. I found that the RC starter fit into the 460 and i rubber banded them together. I then drilled through the 460 with a press into the RC starter. Damn thing works perfectly. I’m still on the fence, but seems to retract better. I feel that starter won’t get caught and break. But we shall see.

Is there a way to mod the spring loaded 460 starter to work with the DDM adapter?

Which RC starter did you buy? Zenoah or CY?
